Here's some description from Jake Wildwood on the Bacon Style C. Since Steve L mentioned Bernunzio, here's a Bacon Style C currently available at a pretty reasonable price. Thats $850 total ready to play all day, with original case. Not that she was unplayable when I got her. You'll go over two grand on a Deering with the mojo of my Orpheum which I got $850 in after a board-off neck plane and all new frets. BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!Ī vintage banjo has a sound you will not get out of the modern stuff, at least the entr-level instruments, and the cool factor is over-the-moon. I bought mine from a player, not a junker or an ebay nutcase. Ebay is loaded, as is banjohangout classifieds, but I STRONGLY suggest that the Mandolin Cafe classifieds will get you a better chance at at better, more playable banjo. I have an Orpheum #1, but the Bacon is a fine instrument as well as Vegas, Strombergs, various Silver Belles. Fact is that there a many, many vintage 17-fret banjos available at reasonable prices. Unless you go for a top of the line Deering or Ode or there's an outfit in Ireland I can't remember the name of, the Good-Time just (to me anyway) does not cut it.
